A growing orthopedic group located in Torrance, CA has an immediate need for a physician assistant. PA would join 8 board certified physicians who are highly skilled, prestigiously trained, and dedicated to using only the most up-to-date technology and orthopedic techniques.
JOB DESCRIPTION: PHYSICIAN’S ASSISTANT - Orthopedics
DAYS: Monday through Friday
HOURS:
Hospital days: 30 minutes prior to a.m. surgeries until final check-out with MD on call
Clinic days: from first scheduled patient of the day until final patient at end of day
REPORTS TO: All physicians of clinic for clinical matters. Administrator for business or administrator matters.
JOB DUTIES: The priorities of the physician assistant are to assist the physicians in the daily routine of his practice as described below to maximize physician time and skills. This is a Full Time, salaried position-not a timed forty (40) hour workweek: We do not expect our physician assistants or nurse practitioner to punch a time clock. Other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO FOR THE PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT - ORTHOPEDICS:
1. Preparation for upcoming surgical cases:
a. Checks & reviews pre-op labs or EKG’s, etc to be sure patient is approved for surgery as required by surgeon.
b. Performs pre-op work-ups for surgery patients with upcoming surgery
2. Assisting in surgery:
a. Is available at least 15 minutes before the start of cases to identify patients in pre-op area and help with positioning of patients. If more time is needed, adjust schedule appropriately. Review equipment with OR crew.
b. Assist in surgery as coordinated with surgical scheduling in office and with MD’s.
c. Assist with wound closures, fitting of braces, post op orders, assist with transferring of patients to post op area.
d. Works with surgery coordinator as the week progresses to see if there are additional surgery cases that require an assistant.
e. After hours or weekends in emergency situations if needed by the physicians.

3. Hospital duties:
a. Make hospital rounds as required by physicians.
b. Medical records-orders, post op notes, discharge summary as needed.
c. ON rare occasions, may be needed by the physicians to do hospital rounds on the weekend.
4. Office duties:
a. Monday-Friday is available in the office per master monthly schedule.
b. Performs a complete physical exam and records findings. Establishes a presumptive diagnosis.
c. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
d. Sees emergency post-op work-in patients who need to be seen that day & the attending physician is not available.
e. Has their own office schedule for follow-up patients, post-ops, pre-ops and ER work-in patients.
f. Handles phone calls from patients to free up nursing staff.
g. Takes phone calls from the hospital floors for orders and questions on patients.
h. Takes phone calls from outside physicians and/or ER physicians if an MD physician is not on-site to do so.
i. Office paperwork-assisting with forms for patients to be completed.
j. Timely submission of patient records and billing (within 2 days of the patient being seen).
JOB QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE FOR THE PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT - ORTHOPEDICS:
 A minimum of two years prior physician assistant experience in a surgeon’s office.
 Knowledge of the professional medical practice and care to give and evaluate patient care.
 Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care.
 Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
 Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
 Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of medicine to provide on-going patient care.
 Skill in taking medical history, assessing medical conditions, and interpreting findings.
 Skill in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.
 Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians, and the public.
 Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
 Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
 Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS FOR THE PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT – ORTHOPEDICS:
Requires a full range of body motion including handling and lifting of patients, and manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Involves standing and walking for prolonged periods of time. Requires exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. Requires normal visual acuity and hearing. Requires working under stress in emergency situations or during irregular hours. Requires working with patients who are sick, irritable, upset or confused.
Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive.
